Raised with Christ: Resurrection Power for Today

Colossians 3:1–4

Picture an emergency room. Machines beep. Doctors rush. Life hangs in the balance. In one room, a monitor shows a flat line. Everyone knows what that means. Then someone calls out, “Clear!” The paddles strike. Electricity pulses. The body jolts. A moment later, the monitor begins to beep. Life returns.

Everyone knows what happened. Someone who was dead is now alive. But everyone also knows something else — the patient did not save himself.

This scene illustrates Easter. The resurrection is about moving from death to life by a power outside ourselves. Many people believe Easter simply celebrates Jesus rising from the dead. But Colossians 3 shows that believers are raised with Christ. The resurrection is not only something Jesus experienced. It becomes the believer’s new reality.

Paul makes this clear in Colossians 3:1–4. Because believers are raised with Christ, their mindset, security, and future all change. Resurrection power does not only promise heaven later. It transforms life now.

Raised With Christ Means You Need a Resurrection (Colossians 3:1)

Paul begins with a condition: “If you have been raised with Christ.” This statement forces a question. Has this resurrection happened?

To be raised with Christ requires faith in the historical resurrection of Jesus. He lived, died on the cross, and rose bodily from the grave. Many witnesses saw Him alive. The resurrection stands at the center of the gospel.

But Paul presses further. The issue is not only that Jesus was raised. The issue is whether the believer has been raised with Christ. Resurrection implies death. A person must die to sin, self-sufficiency, and the attempt to earn salvation.

Paul uses passive language. The believer does not raise himself. God gives new life. Christianity is not self-improvement. It is resurrection transformation. When someone trusts Christ, the old life ends and a new life begins. The same power that raised Jesus now works in the believer.

Because believers are raised with Christ, they no longer live the same way. New life produces new direction.

Raised With Christ Requires a New Mindset (Colossians 3:1–2)

Paul gives two commands: seek the things above and set your mind on things above. These commands flow directly from being raised with Christ. Resurrection changes what believers pursue.

To seek things above does not mean escaping reality. It means living under Christ’s authority. Jesus sits at the right hand of God. He rules and reigns. Those raised with Christ now live as citizens of His kingdom.

Paul also commands believers to set their minds on things above. What fills the mind shapes the heart. What dominates attention directs life. A believer cannot seek Christ while constantly focusing on earthly priorities.

Jesus taught that treasure directs the heart. When someone is raised with Christ, desires begin to shift. The believer increasingly values Christ, His Word, His peace, and His kingdom. The resurrection produces a new pull toward Him. As believers fix their minds on Christ, that pull grows stronger.

Raised With Christ Brings Secure Identity (Colossians 3:3)

Paul explains why believers can live this way: “Your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Those raised with Christ now share secure union with Him. Their identity no longer rests in circumstances.

Being hidden with Christ does not remove hardship. It guarantees presence. Believers face suffering, grief, and difficulty, but they never face them alone. Christ remains with them. Their life stays secure in Him.

This security changes how believers live. Fear loosens its grip. Anxiety loses control. Because believers are raised with Christ, their future is not uncertain. Their life rests safely in Him. Nothing in this world can remove that security.

Raised With Christ Means Future Glory (Colossians 3:4)

Paul ends with hope: “When Christ, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.” Those raised with Christ will share His glory when He returns.

This promise shapes the present. Believers do not live as though this world is the final chapter. The resurrection guarantees future transformation. Spiritual resurrection now leads to physical resurrection later.

Because believers are raised with Christ, they live with anticipation. Their identity rests in Him. Their security remains in Him. Their future belongs to Him.

Jesus died. Jesus rose. Now Paul asks the defining question: Have you been raised with Him?
